WORTH CONSUMING!

I thought I hated okra, though I hadn’t tried it since I was a child. But thanks to this place it turns out I like it after all. Hooray, one more veg to add the the very long like list.

How convenient

Just the other day I was wandering round the Medina in Fenham and I looked at the okra but didn’t really know what they were or what you did with them (I sort of knew that you ate them as I was in a food store) then this lady came in and was piling the okra into her bag, honestly she must have got about 2 kilos of them and I thought about asking her but she seemed in a hurry. Then on Friday I was in Tesco with my Dad (the good one at Kingston Park not the Gateshead one) and I saw them again and I asked my Dad “What are those like and what do you do with them?” and he said they were like eating snots, so I didn’t get any. Prey Absnasm “What are they like and what do I do with them?!”

Not a clue, me dear, not a clue.

I haven’t ventured to prepare them myself and I don’t think I’d dare, to be honest, because I’m afraid the snots only occur when they’re not handled by a professional. The okra I’ve had in the past have certainly been on the glutinous side, but the ones at the Kama Sutra were delish. Kind of the texture of really well-cooked green beans, which sounds horrid but was actually really nice. A little bit stringy, quite squishy. Which also sounds horrid but was nice. Honest! I think the best thing would be to leave it to the pros. Maybe the Komal do something with okra. I actually suspect the ones I had at the Kama Sutra were tinned, so perhaps you could buy a tin and attempt something yourself. It wouldn’t be a huge investment and you could always have a standby dinner on hand in case it went horribly wrong.

that is not reassuring

I really don’t think I want to try okra now – I’ve only just decided green beans are okay!

Green beans are great!

Fresh ones, steamed till crisp, with wholemeal pasta, feta cheese, and a spoonful of pesto. Mmm.

mmm, indeed!

Alas, the only kind I was exposed to as a child were tinned and squishy – put me off for years!

That's understandable.

Tinned veg should be illegal. Especially marrowfat peas.

Marrow. Fat. It doesn’t bode well.

I dunno

Tinned peas and mashed potato. And tinned sweetcorn mixed through (lentil) chilli. Mmm. Probably not anything else, though.

Tinned peas never.

Squishy centre, fibrous skin. Urgh. Sweetcorn can live, though. And all the beans, if they count as veg.
