I honestly have no idea why I don’t like this book. And I’m probably one of the only people who doesn’t like it. It’s not really that I hated it, it had a good message and good characters for the most part, but for some reason I just couldn’t really warm up to it. Perhaps if I had read it on my own rather than being forced to in school, I would have enjoyed it a bit more.

This is one of those amazing books that are ruined when you’re forced to read it in school. When meanings are hammered into your head, you don’t appreciate it as much as when you discover them for yourself. So if you hate this book because you had to read it, it is definitely worth a second, third, sixteenth read. I read it before it was required reading, and I have always loved this novel. Sometimes random passages will pop into my head. ANYWAY—read it.

There are two memorable reasons why I love this book.

1) It was the very first NOVEL that I read from cover to cover. (Not counting the pocketbook type nor the children’s book as well)

2) It’s movie version was the first (and maybe the last) silver screen movie that I have seen. It was a very good adaptation of the novel.

I also made a novel analysis out of this one. Basically I had to analyze the different themes found in the book. And guess what, I got a perfect score in my paper! My professor even praised me for doing such a good job. I’m sure I wouldn’t have gotten 100 if ever I chose another book.

Reading the book and watching the movie as a child utterly impacted my perception/perspective. I learned unconditional compassion and respect for human life. Invest the time in this book- you won’t regret it!
