It’s interesting to re-read these books having seen the films, to recognise things they changed, things they kept the same, things they added. I find that the books are easier to read now, as well, because the film sort of provided a visual reference to go with Tolkien’s word. In my mind’s eye now, Gandalf is Ian McKellen and Bilbo is Ian Holm.

It’s years since I read these books and decided I wanted to catch up with them before I watch the extended versions of the films. I plan to update this as I go.
Well, I finished it – so much for the updating ;>BUT I LOVED it! Fab. Am onto the second one as we speak.
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.’
