I have the solution to the problem of why this movie doesn’t work: take out Jack Black’s character completely and you have a better than average film. His part is totally superfluous and adds, roughly, 15 minutes to the total runtime. Cut him and you’re under 120 minutes and the film makes a little more sense.
However, there are more problems with the film, such as Kate Winslet. Now, I will sit through any movie no matter how bad just to watch Kate Winslet but in this movie she is required to be, well, funny on occassion, and she just isn’t funny. It’s almost as painful watching her try to be funny as it is watching Jack Black try not to be funny.
And how long can we sit through close up after close up of Jude Law and Cameron Diaz, no matter how beautiful their chiseled visages may be, before we start to get bored? By my reckoning they could have cut another 15 minutes of Jude/Cameron close ups and then we might have had a movie on our hands.
But in the final analysis it really seems like something went horribly wrong in the editing room, and that is a shame.

As the title of the review states, the movie is really OK, I have nothing against it. And if you like Jude Law or Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslet, go ahead and see it.
It’s not one of those silly comedies when everything seems so artificial and boring. The script is quite good, but don’t forget that it’s a Hollywood movie after all.

This film is typical of director Nancy Meyers’s recent work…an exploration of the romantic foibles of white, upper class, highly attractive individuals living in major metropolitan areas.
While I enjoyed Something’s Gotta Give and have watched it on cable several times, this movie didn’t grab me. I guess I found it hard to believe that the radiant Kate Winslet couldn’t find the right guy.

Ok – so this movie started out kind of bland and boring and predictable and it remained predictable, but it had a certain charm about it. I really liked the way that the characters were able to look beyond the stereotypes of relationship and find the real person. The best story is the relationship that develops between Kate Winslet’s character and an old Oscar winning movie writer. In spite of initial misgivings, I have to say I liked it and would see it again.

Overall it was a cute-feel-good movie. And although there were a few confusing-plot moments (lack of catalyst for Jude and Cameron’s relationship) and corny-cringe moments (Jude Law’s napkin face), Kate Winslet and Jack Black really made the movie! They were both funny and refreshing, performing naturally, without pushing their relationship overboard. Overall, I would suggest watching this film because if you can get by the initial plot line with Diaz and Law, it will be a charming watch.

Cute romantic comedy worth watching once simply because of Kate Winslet. She completely out-shines Cameron Diaz, who I could have definitely done without. There were a few “cringe” moments, like seeing Jude Law with a napkin on his head, but all in all, I enjoyed it.
Im not sure about this movie! I mean it had it’s good and bad bits. I think I was a bit dissapointed because I was really exicted to see it and when I did I thought it was weird. I thought those movie previews of Amanda’s (Cameron) life were really annoying! They were really random and I don’t think they should have been added.

I liked it anyway but the entire plot was improbable, the relationships contrived, and the constant monologues were desperate and annoying. This wasn’t Cameron’s best work, or anyone else’s for that matter, but the script pushing all the characters together didn’t help the acting. I enjoyed Kate Winslet’s character, only because I could relate to her in some ways.
Cameron Diaz’s life trailers were a lovely touch, innovative and amusing. Not to mention the line: “You look like my Barbie!”
In other words, it’s not a quality film (not that many chick flicks are even near quality films) but it’s better than staring at a ceiling for a few hours. Or it might just be Jude Law <3
