WORTH CONSUMING!

Cheesy title, I know, but what the hell? Doug Liman, who directed Identity, is the executive producer for this one, and Paul Greengrass (interesting name) directed Supreme. I haven’t bothered to look up why the change in directorship, though, but clearly Greenglass knew what to do with the film.

On one of the DVD’s bonus features, Greenglass attempted to get things in one take, or at least not rehearse scenes before shooting them—the one he was referring to was when Bourne was running from one of the snipers (Karl Urban). Matt Damon said something to the effect that Greenglass encouraged the actors to do what they felt would make his/her scene real, sort of gave them license to “direct” their own acting. Obviously, it worked!

SPOILER*

I was highly disappointed that Marie died in the beginning of the movie, but . . . that’s the nature of being on the run. Um, I think. :P

This one is a little better then the first. They just need to hold the camera steady and not chop up the action scenes so you can actually follow the story.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I liked it about as much as the first one: surprisingly quite a bit, for an action movie. (That last phrase is the key here.) I actually thought the plot was more interesting, because there was more mystery about what was going on with that Russian guy. But I was sad that Franka died in the first five minutes. All in all a fun movie with an intense car chase and some good acting.

WORTH CONSUMING!

While The Bourne Supremacy may deviate greatly from the novel of the same name, I’ve never read it, so I can only judge the film on its own merits. As it stands, it’s a good enough action movie, with some great actors and some amazing action sequences (as Sarah said below: car chase!). The story’s a little unbelievable, but there are excellent moments and snippets of dialogue. And it helps that the actors are of high caliber: Joan Allen, Brian Cox, and Matt Damon give better performances than one would expect from your average action movie. It reminded me of the old Connery Bond movies (especially From Russia With Love), where he had a few gadgets but otherwise relied on his wits and his fists. This is the kind of spy action movie I want to see more of, not the plastic blandness of Die Another Day. The extras on this DVD are interesting and really watchable, particularly the feature on the Go-Mobile. The Bourne Supremacy isn’t great cinema, but it’s a fun ride with great action. Recommended.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

The movie has absolutely nothing to do with the novel. The characters are the same and there is one very basic premise of the plot that remains. Otherwise it’s an entirely different story. I wasn’t too impressed with the movie in itself, and the fact that it had nothing to do with the novel whatsoever was disappointing, because it was a really good story and there was no reason it couldn’t have been retold as the movie.
