A story about this — 1 year ago
In my opinion, this is the least engaging of all of Forster’s books. I was also quite young when I read them all, so maybe my opinion would be different now…

I didn’t really enjoy the story, but the writing was well done.
I finally finished this book after almost two months. It was harder to digest whilst reading in the U.S. But once I picked it up again in India, it made more sense. Forster’s dialogue is a bit hard to follow, but his descriptions of India are spot-on, even 80 years later.
This one had to grow on me, as I started out listening to it in a distracted state of mind, but it’s finally hooked me. The story itself is interesting – the interplay of people and cultures in British colonial India of the 1920’s – but the storytelling is masterful. In fact, this is one where listening to the book was hard, because the arrogant, snooty British attitude came across so strongly in the narrator that I almost gave up. Now I’m glad I didn’t.
