WORTH CONSUMING!

A 21st Century, independent woman finds the lead character from her favourite novel – that’s Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice – in her bathroom, with a secret door leading into the novel itself. Thrilled with the idea of visiting a more genteel age (and meeting Mr Darcy!), Amanda Price ventures through the door – only to have it slam behind her!

Amanda spends the next four episodes trying desperately to hold the plot of a well-loved story together without its main character. Obviously things aren’t so easy!

The whole story first struck me as a total rip-off of Jasper Ffffforde’s Thursday Next books (especially the most recent, First Among Sequels), but other than the vague idea of being able to get into a book (albeit the same one!), the two aren’t particularly similar, as here the characters are completely unaware that they are anything other than absolutely real people.

I rather enjoyed this, in a fluffy kind of a way. Some might consider messing with Austen to be sacrilege, but in truth the tale has been adapted so often that it was fab to have a sort-of version, where I had no clue what was going to happen next!
