My fiancĂ©e absolutely loves this movie, so when we watched it last night I tried really hard not to compare it to the original film version. First, to get the obvious out of the way: it’s nowhere NEAR as good as the ‘68 version. But it’s not that good a movie on its own merit, either.
That’s mostly because of the leads: Broderick is completely unremarkable, Lane is entertaining 50% of the time and grating the rest. The supporting cast fares much better; Uma Thurman is exceptional, and Will Ferrel & Gary Beach kept me entertained. The song-and-dance routines were another big let-down – except for “Springtime for Hitler” and “That Face”. The film went on for far too long, and when it was finally over I was more relieved than impressed. Stick with the original, folks.
This is potentially one of the worst movies ever made. Why remake something and make it just as stupid as the original?
First off, this movie is about as funny as The Hours. Actually, The Hours is funnier.
It’s stuffed with bad comedy that went out of style 30 years ago. Mathew Broderick gives one of the worst performances you will ever see. It’s like a bad high school play. Nathan Lane and Will Ferrell are completely wasted, as they cave into the awful gags of Mel Brooks and waste their comedic talents completely.
I won’t even get into the story. The story is fine. It’s quite far-fetched, but who cares? People watch this for the comedy, and it will only piss you off with it’s bad gags and jokes.
If your sense of humor sucks then see this movie.
