this cold, distant film is based on the much better Haruki Murakami story. Irritatingly precious piano sequences. Pretentious word by word narration from the story taken up on occasion by the main characters. Beautiful to look on in parts, but no pulse. There are some remarkable images and situations depicting moments of loneliness and loss, but there is nothing to contrast these images against; everyone and everything is equally without life in this airless film. Two miniature scenes were tacked on at the end to little effect. I looked forward to Tony Takitani for a long time and wanted very much to like this film, but i can’t. Stick with the story.
