Great premise but not many laughs — 1 year ago
Albert Brooks hates his middle-manager ad agency exec life but is counting on a promotion to senior vice-president to enable he and his wife to get a bigger house and (he believes) a better life. When someone lower on the totem pole gets the nod, he freaks out in the boss’ office, getting himself canned in the process, and decides it’s a sign that he and his wife should sell everything, get an RV, and life a carefree hobo life with a tidy nest egg they’ll get from selling all the stuff.
- SPOILERS AHEAD! *
The duo decide to stop in Vegas to get re-married but while there Julie Hagerty’s character has her own meltdown at a roulette wheel, losing all the $100 grand save for about a thousand dollars. The two have to struggle to see if they can actually make the ‘Easy Rider’ lifestyle work at this point with Brooks taking a $5 an hour crossing guard job and Hagerty an assistant manager spot at “Der Weiner Haus”. In the end, the two decide they’re “born to be mild” instead and go back to the Big Apple to eat crow and return to the cubicle dweller live’s they’re accustomed to.
I think I only chuckled maybe 4 times during the flick, no real belly laughs, and for that reason I’m not sure this was worth my time.
