The Issue of Christian Values — 43 weeks ago

I do think it’s possible to read and enjoy this even as a non-Christian. But it can be difficult to ignore the overt Christian themes and lessons, plus the way it constantly suggests that if you don’t agree with every single Christian value taught in the book than you must be a horrible person. Even so, I still found it an interesting book to read, not only as a good fantasy tale but I enjoy seeing connections between modern day fantasy and ancient mythology/religion. Just because I find it interesting does not necessarily mean I have to either believe every Christian value or despise them. I read them as an adult though so this may have something to do with it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is an absolute classic series and consistently makes all the best of children’s literature lists. Lewis wa a friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote another series based on a Christian allegory that you might have heard of, and both belong on everyone’s must read shelf. If you don’t want to pay attention to the underlying Christian message, it is still possible to read the series with enjoyment. I do agree with B.S that The Screwtape Letters is a very entertaining, ironic book which is worth reading, but it is also aimed at adults, not children, which must be taken into consideration in a comparison.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

A load of Christian propaganda disguised as a children’s book. I read this when I was in 1st grade and it bored the hell out of me. If you want to see a good book by C.S. Lewis read The Screwtape Letters. Sure, The Screwtape Letters is also Christian propaganda but it’s a lot more interesting then this.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love the Chronicles of Narnia. I read them many times as a kid, and I recently reread them during the holidays. What irritates me about the newer editions though is that publishers have changed the original order of the books. The Magician’s Nephew is not the first book. Maybe I’m a purist…
