One of those fabulous Costco book table purchases. This is my favourite of all of John Irving novels (it was also the first novel of his that I read). His characters are still conflicted… but not in such an odd way that they are unidentifable.

The best element of the book… the photographs of the two boys.

This novel was recently made into a feature film called “A Door in the Floor” with Jeff Bridges. I was disappointed with what I saw of the film, but that was to be expected.

I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as I did some of Irving’s other books—there’s something about the narrator’s voice that is different in this one, darker, a bit unkind—but it’s still a good read, if you’re a fan of his writing.

If you’ve ever considered being a writer, you’ll love this Irving book. And hopefully, it will inspire you to write!
