I chose the wrong time to watch this movie, it made me depressed.

I think this movie was too Japanese for me to really enjoy.

Enh. There were too many unbelievable things stacked up at the start of this movie for me to believe any of the rest of it.

The scenes in the village were the best. Quiet, graphic and horrifying. The surrounding packaging didn’t hold up.

The half-dead can move really, really fast, quasi-dead can see into your mind and Riddick gets in a lucky stab to the skull.

Oh, and pretty ship drive effects.

Pitch Black was uninspiring, unfrightening and not very gruesome. It has poor computer-drawn beasties and only shells of characters. Some unresolved background for Riddick is left unexplained and covered in Chronicles, but all of it is passing, none of it central to anything.

Riddick is also a big wuss compared to his behavior in Chronicles, but there are several years of development for him in between.

Putting all of it together, I have no idea how it did well enough to spawn a sequel.

Tom Cruise is a complete Gaijin Superhero in The Last Samurai:

• Need to prove the army isn’t ready? Gaijin Smash!
• Living as a captive of a bunch of Samurai? Gaijin Perimeter and Gaijin Ocular Blast!
• Getting mud all over the tatami? Gaijin Telepathy!
• Need to rescue the noble captive? Gaijin Smash!
• Need to visit the emporer? Gaijin Smash!

The movie is actually pretty awesome if you shout out the gaijin superpowers Tom Cruise uses when appropriate..

While good and enjoyable, I don’t think this was Pixar’s best effort. The story wasn’t quite as gripping as some of their other works, and the animation in the underwater environment didn’t the same feel the other Pixar movies have, perhaps due to the focus on the characters and the relative lack of background detail.

I knew nothing about this movie before going to see it beyond a few trailers showing fantasy stuff. Within the first five minutes I discovered it was in Spanish and set in Spain after the civil war.

The mixture of ordinary and fantastical elements take on a surreal quality, and I’m not sure how to judge the ending, which version was reality? Or were both of them?

Or, top ten, hands down.

Labyrinth is far too intimate with David Bowie’s crotch. I now know far, far more about David Bowie’s penis than I ever wished to know, and he didn’t even take his pants off.

However, were I 16 again I’d probably not notice David Bowie’s crotch and instead be focused on Jennifer Connelley.
