WORTH CONSUMING!

The movie itself is really astonishing. The action starts right away and the music moves you right along. The story line is compelling. The masses of people filling the screen. The light and dark and angles. All remarkable.

If you aren’t enjoying the film itself, you can amuse yourself by watching for the different ways that contemporary scifi pays homage to it. The city scenes of The Fifth Element and Futurama. The cyborg of Terminator. The factory life of Modern Times. Certainly kazillions more than you’ll be able to see.

Finally, some of the over-the-top, silent film star acting will just crack you up. The joy of coincidences, too. “What are my workers doing in the catacombs” the boss man says. “The catacombs just happen to be at the foot of these stairs in my house and I have these flashlights sitting here. Let’s find out!” the inventor seems to say. Too funny.

Over the top — 22 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was a fairly well surprised by the over-the-top performances and campy musicality. Any movie that can surprise me so much that I’m either laughing or staring in astonishment—well, that’s a movie that’s alright in my book.

Solid performances from a high profile cast. Quirky but enjoyable writing and directing from Turturro. Whimsical music and dance numbers.

A story about "True Grit" — 22 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve never liked westerns and I’ve never liked John Wayne…but this one might make me change my mind on both. Good story. Great acting. Beautiful scenery. Hmmm. Maybe westerns aren’t so bad afterall.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m unsure how I lasted well into adulthood without seeing this movie until now. Now I see why it’s such a beloved classic.

Some of my favorite scenes—the nuns singing How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, Julie Andrews enthusiastically swinging her arms when she’s singing about confidence, the passage of time as the kids learn to sing Doe a Deer.

It’s a feel good musical with much more than that to recommend it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Am still working on this one. It’s still good but still a slow read. Am about half-way through.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Didn’t know what I was getting into when I decided to watch this movie. Had little idea of the plot; didn’t know who was in it. I was in no way prepared for the impact.

This is one of the most powerful films I’ve seen in a while. It was hard to watch at times because of the intensity. Gave me plenty to think about—about our times, about technology, about the future. I recommend it for anyone who can handle the bleakness.

Checked this out of the library and then it got recalled by someone else before I even got started. Doh! Will try again.

Have been enjoying this book. It’s a textbook so sort of a slow read, but really good all the same.

It got recalled by the library for another patron so I’m on hold with it right now. Am on p.198.
