    WORTH CONSUMING!

The end of the world- it’s a scary thing. Even for someone like myself who is saved by the blood of Jesus, just thinking about the end times scares me. I fear for those family and friends not saved. I fear for those who will die. Those who won’t have a second chance.
I could’ve picked a much bigger book than this. It’s only 110 pages. But, I’ll tell you a secret- dispite my salvation, the whole book of the Revelations of John really freaks me out.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a very quaint collection of WWII comics drawn by Bill Mauldin. I’m not sure who he is, but he’s got talent. The humor is alot like MASH, very authentic and topical- Pro American and Anti-war at the same time.
The best aspect of this book is the director’s cut type commentary at the end of the book that helps explain some of these cartoons in which if you did not know SOP, you’d very lost!
Sadly, not every comic gets this treatment, as they still were some that went over my head.
I cannot wait to read Vol. 1!

So the Voyage Home is complete, now Kirk and crew have a ship that doesn’t work and every little to no crew. All is not right with the world, but the writer makes it work.
The cover artist however, butchers the Star Trek logo. See above picture. It’s lop-sided and looks amatuerish.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I hope to one day get my Ph.D in food science. It’s such a fascinating subject, and if one can grasp just a fraction of what it’s all about, it will so improve your cooking skills, love of fine food, and knowledge of cuisine in general. It’s essential to know this stuff if you want to even be considered a foodie!
I am a foodie- I own my own hot sauce retail store and website. So, when it came to finding a book that would be topical with my recent trips to the beach, I choose a great book about New York’s (formerly) thriving oyster industry. Who knew?
This book is written by a former James Beard Winner, is about food and the science of food (the sections on waste and cholera may make you never want another oyster again), the prep of oysters, the history of old New York, makes this like my dream book.
There are even tons of recipes. But since I am not an osyter fan- I doubt I’d even make them. Well, no, I’d make them- I just doubt I would try them.
    Very Much Worth Consuming.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I labeled this wrong- it’s not manga- it’s 50 times better. I couldn’t tell if I was looking at cells from a cartoon or inked artwork. It’s that good. The adaptation is very well done- this is like Stoker’s book, not the Lugosi Drac.
Very entertaining read. It’s suppose to be part of a series, like those Illustrated Classics of the 80s (which freakin’ rock!), and I would love to find more!

    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Compared to many film adaptations (and I’ve read a bunch) this one is sort of a let down. Before Deluxe DVD editions, comic adaptations were as close as you’d get to director’s cut teeming with screens not show in theatres. Case it point- Marvel’s Star Wars adpatation show a walking Walrus as Jabba the Hut and the ultimate adaptation- Indepedence Day spends about 10 pages focusing on the lives of all it’s many players years before the invasion.
The humor, thankfully in still there- but instead of new scenes, alot has been removed, making this not worth consuming!

So Kirk breaks the rules of Starfleet with his solution to the Romulan encounter, loses the Excelsior (thus removing the comics nly characters from the equation), and flees to Vulcan to both help restore Spock to health and seek political asylum.
A fairly good turn of events.
Now, let the Voyage Home begin!

A review of "Heroes, Volume One" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I nothing nearly nothing about the TV show Heroes- which is weird, because I am a huge fan of comic books and super heroes. But, for some reason I just haven’t have a chance to catch this show.
So, I took a big chance reading this volume, which is a compliation of NBC.com’s mini-comics based on the show. You don’t have to know everything that is going on to enjoy this show. In fact, for someone like me who knows the phrase “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World” and thinks it’s a reference to Paula Abdul’s bizarre behavior on American Idol, this is a great way to get a crash course into the show.
I definitely want to see this show now that I have read this volume- but I don’t think I am going to start on the upcoming “Villains” storyline. I’ll just have to be patient and wait for reruns.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

So, you finish watching the Search For Spock, Spock goes from his resurrectuion straight into the captains seat of the Science Vessel Surak. Wait, that’s not how you remember the Trek films?
Obviously, DC wanted to keep Spock in the picture, so they created this subplot. Well, now it’s time for Star Trek IV, and it seems that DC painted themselves into a corner. The solution? Kill all of the members of the Surak, destroy the ship and have Spock wind up in a life threatening coma in which the only people who can save Spock are on Vulcan.
It seems like a good premise, but there’s that small problem with the fact that Kirk and Co. are now memmbers of the Exclesior crew.

The Maggie’s Planet storyline ends with (Spoiler) the Klingons being the good guys!
A great change of pace and worth every panel to consume this.
Only problem with this storyline- it’s way to short- the character of Maggie is like Space Fonzie meets Clint Eastwood. Sadly, DC and Rodenberry missed an oppurtunity to spin-off Maggie into his own title!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

To celebrate Star Trek’s 20th anniversary, Dc not only devotes an entire issue to the original series- it does not use any of their A- list players to craft the tale (Notes from the issue before states how everyone who’s wokred on the series for the past year or 2 are taking a break). I’m sorry, but if you have an issue that honors such a gem of a show like the original series, you should tell your staff to suck it up and take a vacation after the commerative issue is through.
But, alas, they did not and this squad of subs proved that you can’t go home again- no matter how hard ya try.
WHO am I kidding? The Older wiser Starfleet crew meet up with their younger selves and the results are freakin’ awesome. Though, I do stand by my opinion on having a second string tackle this tale- it’s truly worth consuming and a must own for any Trek Collector!

Having read the dust jacket, I thought that I was in for a quirky, informative read about people who make pilgrimages to shrine dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus. It sounded interesting and a change of pace from the recent books on religion I have been reading for this project. So I cheerfully checked it out.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

A great opening chapter about the Federation and Klingons attempt to win a contest as to who best should colonize a planet.
The character of Maggie is one of the best “new” characters I have seen in this series.
This storyline reminds me of my favorite Trek novel, “How much for Just the Planet”, only it lacks the sublte humor.
Still, I enjoyed this issue very much! Worth Consuming!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Uhura is often the most named character in Star Trek besides Kirk and Spock. She’s also the least used.
This was a nice story about her and some of her origins. It’s nothing I’d write home about, but it was enjoyable, although, you might also say it’s a bit on the forgettable side, as I think back on it, I get it confused with another issue.
    Worth Consuming.

A review of "Essential Ant Man TPB (Essential Ant-Man)" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Dr. Henry Pym, Ant Man, Giant Man…. no wonder this character has had one of the most complex storylines in all of comicdom.
I really like Hank and his sidekick Jan Van Dyne. I hated when they divorced. I cheered when they were seen as a couple together in the recent Civil War series.
However, for a 60s Marvel series, it’s gets kinda hokey. However, 2 of what many consider to be the worst villains of all-time (The Top and Porcipine Man) actually are what makes this volume corny. Mainly, it’s the faux romantic tension between Pym and Van Dyne. Stan Lee never really was the “man” when it came to raomantic dialogue.
Regardless, I enjoyed this book and probably will add it to my collection on a permanent basis.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It took me awhile to want to read this book. Especially, since I did not like the first volume of Hellboy. But, I just saw the 1st movie, which was awesome and having seen that Abe is a main character, I decided to give this a try.
For a rookie to a series, coming into the 6th volume, this is actually a great book to start with as many of the BPRD teams origins are examined. Sadly, Abe is more minor in this that I’d like, but I read like the character of Johann.
I’d give another volume a try.

A review of "Star Trek #29 (DC Comics 1986-1989, 1st Series)" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

With a focus on the “comics only” character of Bearclaw, this stoory is great! Art is iffy, especially the cover. It makes the old Marvel renderings looks like masterpieces.
Still, I enjoy this issue and I would read it again.
    Worth Consuming!

A review of "Star Trek #28 (DC Comics 1986-1989, 1st Series)" — 13 weeks ago

Yet another “Death Of Sad Sack” cover, in which what happens on the front never occurs in the story.
McCoy stories are usually pretty good, but without Spock as his foil, the witty banter and charm of such tales in missing.
The art is actually pretty good, with quite a few renderings spot on!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the best concept issues of all-time. This involves a day in the life of the Enterprise. Everything’s routine until a red alert and thing things get really interesting.
One of the best “Chekov” storylines I’ve ever run across.
    Great cover too!

Don’t Think Ledger should get the Oscar?
Don’t Think Ledger really went insane during/ prior to filming?
Don’t Think Ledger was the Best Joker….EVER!?

Watch the scene when he walks out of the hospital in his Nurses uniform and fiddles with an ignition device for a C4 bomb and will will believe the following:

    1. He’s gonna get the Oscar
    2. He’s not playing with a full deck on or off screen
    3. He’s the BEST…. JOKER…. EVER!

Heath alone is why this movie is worth consuming!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Waited a loooonngggg time to read this book- but it’s highly worth the wait. Jeph Loeb is one of the greatest writers of all time- and not just in comicdom. Heck- this is the genuis behing LOST.
Comprised of 5 issues, each dealing with one of the stages of grief. The best are “Depression”, dealing with Spidey’s reaction to the death of Capt. America. And ‘Anger”, which has a ton of comical moments during a poker game between Ben Grimm and the New Avengers.

Another Spock and the Surek tale. But compared to the previous one- this one is much better.
It involves the Romulans, a bicycle and the irony that the black first officer is racist towards a half human/ half vulcan capt.

A review of "Superman - Doomsday (DC Universe Animated Original Movie)" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

If you call a movie Superman: Doomsday- Doomsday should appear in most of the movie. However, here he’s seen only briefly and doesn’t appear after about the 30 minute mark.
Baldwin does a good job as Superman/ Kent- but I’d rather have Tim Daly or Newbern doing the voice.
Anne Heche is not a good Lois- her voice is more suited for playing Lois Lane in those cartoons of the 40s. She sounds like Katherine Hepburn trying to pitch a story to Spencer Tracy in Adam’s Rib.
And what is up with Luthor’s outfit. It’s a cross between the Lab coat Brainiac used to wear in the 50s and Howard Hughes. While this Luthor is creepy- he’s too campy looking to seem like a threat to Superman. He needs the black power suit he wore in the Animated Series.
I would not reccomend paying money to see this movie. But, it is a fun ride if you can catch it one Cartoon Network for free, like I did!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m glad I didn’t give up on this movie after having read the book. I didn’t like Hellboy the comic book (vol. 1) that much. It wasn’t funny, and Abraham is virtually non-existent in this book.
The movie is 1000 times better and there are 4 good reasons:
    1. Ron Perlman
    2. David Hyde Pierce as Abe
    3. John Hurt (the guy could act the phone book and I would watch it!)
    4. the humor
    5. The Nazis are totally creepy and I like the whole Hitler and his use of the supernatural to win WW2 (see Raiders of the Lost Ark).
Ok- that’s 5 reasons. But what can I say- this movie rocked!

The most menacing species in the entire galaxy is a race of Kittens. Mind you, these kittens have phasers- but I would rather face them that to come home in the dark to my 3 guys having forrgotten to leave a light on.
This 2-part story is the best in the series!
I love it. Worth consuming for any Trek, humor, or comics fan!

Redjac returns and this time he’s possessing the crew. Based on my least fav original series episode.
The only saving grace is that for the longest time, noone realizes who’s doing the killing and Bryce and Konom are major players in the action.
If not for this, I wouldn’t give it any stars at all!

    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

If I had to pick my least favorite episode of Star Trek: TOS, it wouldn’t take long to pick one. Hands down- “Wolf in the Fold”. The spirit of Jack the Ripper is in fact an Alien demon entity?
    I don’t think so.
So of course, they bring “Redjac” back. And I hate almost every minute of it. The fact that Scotty is not the main character in this arc keeps it from being only 1 star!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

The stories in this collection are excellent, especially the Night Thrasher story. In fact, I’d love for them to do an entire Marvel Adventures series on him.
The art, however, is off. Parker looks even more child-like than he should. Instead of a 15-16 year old kid, this Parker looks 11, 12 tops. Plus, the Green Goblin’s costume looks funny- as in something’s missing or not drawn correctly (not HA Ha! funny).
So, while I still say this is worth consuming- I only give it 4 stars- due to the art.

Once you read the director’s cut info in the back of this volume, the story seems to make more sense and not as childish. This is hard, especially, since the main super heroes are kids!
