I was really impressed by this novel. There’s something so deeply emotional about the tone, even as it is distinctive in its dispassion. It’s full of small, details, telling details that, in just a word or five, give you incredible insight into characters and situations.
This is much better than the movie. Highly recommended.
This is a really fun and encouraging book for the new sewist. I had to return the book to the library before I got a chance to make anything – but I know my fair use photocopies will come in very handy soon!
‘Read’ this one as an audiobook. Some interesting points for people trying to get started in a career, but some seriously outdated advice, too. Worth reading with a dose of healthy skepticism.
A really interesting look at our natural tendency to assign blame – and never to ourselves – instead of admitting mistakes and failings. The authors look at the way we create scenarios to get ourselves around what they term “cognitive dissonance” – the knowledge that we’ve done something stupid or wrong, a knowledge that doesn’t jive with the thoughts we have of ourselves as smart, good people. It also gives the reader a number of strategies to help them look at their thoughts and actions and re-evaluate them in more objective ways.
It’s a very interesting read that will leave you thinking, and seeing more clearly.
Gawd. Nothing in this movie was funny.
The best I can think to say about this is that it’s a quick read. I guess there was something to it, but really it was a bit grating. In terms of writing though, it was 100 per cent what it set out to be, and the character never wavered. So while I can see the skill, I guess, I didn’t really enjoy the experience.
A review of "The Plain Janes" — 37 weeks agoI was actually planning to read a different graphic novel by the same author, but this was the one the library had. The story did seem a bit low on the ground, with this whole bizarre dichotomy between town and city that was never clearly explained, but I can see how the overarching message would be really empowering to younger women, probably. It did show a world where difference was strength, even if the characters did tend entirely toward stereotype.
I didn’t actually try any recipes from this book, nor did any particularly captivate me – but the historical botany that accompanies each vegetable made it well worth the read.
This movie was an awful lot of fun! Emotional and consistently funny and sweet.
I think I just find chicklit generally too shallow and unrealistic. Sorry dudes.
