Key points to ponder when buying a generator
Certain things are easy to purchase. For instance, most people will know what to look for in a car if they need to buy themselves a new vehicle. There are superficial things like colour and make, but there are more important aspects too, like service history, load capacity, chassis, and engine specifications and safety. But that is what you look for in a car, an asset that is quite frequently bought and with which most people are familiar. When it comes to something a little more obtuse, like generators for example, what is it that you should look for? Here are a few tips and points to ponder if you ever find yourself looking to buy a generator.
Does size matter?
The answer to this question is that it is critical. In the same way that you don’t want to bring a knife to a gunfight, so you don’t want to purchase a generator that is not fit for the job, you need it for. It is not a case of bigger is better. If you find a 150kva generator for sale don’t just buy it because it comes at a good price. You need to factor in what it is due to power and how big it is. The larger the generators’ capacity to generate is, the harder it is to move. It might sound like an obvious thing to say but there are many people who have ended up with units that are so difficult to move that they never end up being used.
Remember the environment
The environment is critical, and you want to make sure that whatever unit you purchase is not going to do bad things to the world. It doesn’t matter what size you buy, be it 45kva generators or something much larger you should always check to see that your unit is fully bunded, fire retardant and that it is properly soundproofed. Remember this is a diesel-powered machine so you want to make sure that it operates cleanly and quietly.
Read the papers
In the same way that you would never buy a car without looking at its book of words, so too should you never buy a generator without checking all its supporting documents. Check to make sure that the unit you purchase comes with detailed manuals as well as with testing certificates included.
Performance
Similar to cars again, you need to know a bit about the tech performance levels you can expect from your generator. These can be high-performance machines that are stressed through hard and heavy use. Look to make sure that you get something that has alternators that come with AREP winding as well as with tropicalised protection for performance in the most demanding environments. You might also want to factor in things like connectivity. Lots of the most modern units have modems and internet access as part of the unit, which means that they can be managed remotely – a very handy feature.
